The best way to reduce the risk of a traffic crash is to practice safe driving behavior.   Here are some helpful tips to keep you safe.  All of the following information is readily available from driver handbooks and other government agencies:

When you’re behind the wheel of a car – whether alone or with passengers – driving safely should always be your top concern.  We are more distracted than ever, so it’s crucial to know the basics of safe driving and practice them every time you’re on the road.  Your safety, and the safety of others depend on it.

Pedestrians

It is the motorist’s responsibility to do everything possible to avoid colliding with any pedestrians. Bicyclists, skaters and skateboarders in a crosswalk or driveway are considered pedestrians. Turning motorists must yield to pedestrians at intersections with traffic signals.  Motorists must yield to pedestrians crossing the street or driveway at any marked mid-block crossing, driveway or intersection without traffic signals.  In 1968, Florida became the only state to allow for its state constitution to be revisited and changed through a regularly scheduled commission called the Constitution Revision Commission.  Once every 20 years, Florida’s Constitution provides for the creation of a 37-member revision commission for the purpose of reviewing Florida’s Constitution and proposing changes for voter consideration.  The Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) meets for approximately one year, traveling the State of Florida, identifying issues, performing research and possibly recommending changes to the (State) Constitution.  Any amendments proposed by the CRC would be placed on the 2018 General Election ballot.  You can visit their web site at flcrc.gov to see all of the proposed Commission and Public Proposals, the full text of each proposed ballot amendment and additional information about the commission.

You might want to consider voting by mail, mailed to you by the Supervisor of Elections 35 days prior to the election.  This will allow you plenty of time to review the eight (8) amendments being proposed by the CRC.  In addition, there are numerous other amendments and perhaps a few local issues for consideration.  The eight proposals by the CRC are as follows: Continue reading

There are so many incredible things happening in our community. Significant new facilities are under construction for the McLane Company and Cardinal LG.  The Power Plant Business Incubator continues to help innovative and scalable startups primarily in the areas of technology, health care, and communications. The downtown continues to generate enthusiasm with the new Hilton Garden Inn under construction, an ever growing line up of restaurants and stores, and more residential options in the works. All of this excitement and growth is in large part the result of our partners. Thank you for your engagement and investment in moving Ocala and Marion County forward.

What have we learned from the Forest High School shooting? During a conversation with a nurse this last month, we were talking about what we learned from this shooting suspect at Forest High School. Sources say most of our resources were at Forest High when the call came in that there was another student with a gun at West Port High School. The school was locked down, the student had a gun but was not attempting to use it. Meanwhile the person that I talked to said she received a call stating the school her daughter was at was in lockdown, her daughter was safe and in the background there were people hollering, sirens blaring. Things sounded like chaos in the background. This would be easy to fix. The parents need to know if things are under control. Don’t give them a heart attack. Maybe an automatic dialing system and a brief message without the background noise.

For those of you that have not watched the video interview of the suspect in the Forest High School shooting, watch it on www.ocala.com. You will see the true story. Continue reading

Sounds great to me. Let’s pay more taxes so the visitors can run across our state faster. Let’s connect the big cities to everything. Let’s run over family farms that don’t want to sell their property. In this case the The Coastal Connecter is building roads from Homosassa and Crystal River to north roadways to 301 north of Ocala to bring more traffic to an area that is bursting with traffic. This will be toll roads!

OK now that I got that out of my system. The state of Florida does not have a good track record when it comes to abusing permanent residents. Let’s list the abuses.

Let’s talk about what percentage of residents across the state it displaced. Let’s talk about the Turnpike because it is the Turnpike Authority enterprise that wants to build the Coastal Connector. This is the first time I have seen the word “enterprise” used. The Turnpike that is being used right now cut off the water flow of the wetlands in Florida from east to west for almost 300 miles. We watched Cypress Head dry up and die. Impact to the environment! The end of the Turnpike truck stop area is a mess. Working girls and homeless all mixed together with businesses, truckers, residents have found a place to survive. Continue reading

Fishing off Aruba: Bob Irwin of Bob’s Coins & Jewelry, Inc. and Wendy Netherclift of TomL Publishing LLC pictured in Aruba on a fishing trip. Bob said he wanted to target a Marlin and that’s what he did. The Marlin weight was approximately 450-500 lbs 12’ long, the largest Marlin the Charter Boat Captain had ever seen on that side of the island. It was caught and release. They were fishing in 1600 feet of water. The trip also caught 8 tuna 70-80 lbs and 5 tuna 20-30 lbs.

WILDWOOD, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott attended a groundbreaking ceremony in The Villages to kick off construction of the Center for Advanced Healthcare at Brownwood, as well as the Brownwood Hotel and Spa. Governor Scott said, “It was great to celebrate a project that will create jobs and serve the 120,000 residents of The Villages. The Villages is a prime example of our state’s economic success. Florida has created more than 1.5 million jobs since December 2010 because of projects like the one we celebrated today.”
