As Democrats continue playing politics with your hard-earned tax dollars, let’s be clear on why we’re here.
Democrats are blocking House Republicans’ plan to keep the government open because they’re demanding radical carve-outs, including free health care and special benefits for illegal immigrants. In Subsection E of their counterproposal, they’ve explicitly requested:
- Medicaid coverage for illegal immigrants, even paying more for their emergency care than for American seniors, children, or disabled patients;
- Reinstating Obamacare subsidies for non-citizens that low-income American citizens cannot access;
- Preserving California’s gimmick to funnel Medicaid dollars into its “illegals-only” program.
That’s the real fight: Democrats are willing to shut down government services for you and your family in order to guarantee taxpayer-funded benefits for people here illegally. This is unacceptable.
Here’s what a shutdown means for Florida families, seniors, students, veterans, and small businesses.
- Social Security & Medicare
Social Security checks will still go out. Applications, appeals, benefit changes, and card replacements will continue.
Some services—like benefit verifications, third-party requests, and corrections unrelated to benefits—will pause.
Medicare and Medicaid payments will continue, but it may be harder to reach someone for help due to staff furloughs.
- WIC & SNAP Benefits
WIC funding (for women, infants, and children) will run out quickly without congressional action—leaving parents and kids at risk.
SNAP (food stamp) benefits could also be impacted if the shutdown drags on.
- Our Military & Veterans
Our men and women in uniform will still defend this nation every day, but they won’t get their paychecks until Congress acts. Back pay will be guaranteed.
Veterans’ benefits and health services will continue, but some administrative programs may pause. Burials and headstone processing at national cemeteries will still go forward.
- Students & Loans
Pell Grants and student loans will still be disbursed for a short time, but staffing cuts mean delays could pile up if the shutdown lasts.
FAFSA processing and student loan servicing will continue only “for a very limited time.”
- Mail & Travel
Postal Service stays open.
Air travel continues, but TSA officers and air traffic controllers will be working without pay.
Passport applications will keep moving, both here and abroad.
- Federal Employees
By law, federal employees will receive back pay once the shutdown ends.
Contractors, however, are not guaranteed back pay.
- Housing & Small Business Loans
FHA will stop approving housing loans—delays could be severe and long-lasting.
The Small Business Administration will stop reviewing and approving new loans, putting small business owners on hold.
- Immigration & Border
Visa and passport services continue (fee-funded).
Immigration courts for detained cases proceed, but non-detained cases will be rescheduled.
Border agents and ICE officers will keep working, as they are essential.
- Taxes
The IRS will keep operating—tax refunds and extensions are still due. If you filed for an extension, the deadline remains October 15.
- Capitol Tours & National Parks
Tours of the Capitol, White House, and other federal sites will be canceled.
Some national parks and open-air memorials may remain open without staff—but services like bathrooms, trash pickup, and rescue operations will be limited.
House Republicans passed a bill to keep the government open and protect your benefits. Democrats are blocking it to push their radical wish list—like free healthcare for illegal immigrants and billions for woke pet projects. Florida families, seniors, and servicemembers deserve better.
