Experience has taught us that the best thing to do before a hurricane is prepare, so you can be confident during a storm that you’ve done everything you can to keep your family safe. As your Chief of Police, I want you to know that during a hurricane, the men and women of the Lady Lake Police Department are here to help, but the responsibility of preparation begins with you! As a local law enforcement agency, we work with our local, state, and federal partners to improve our response, cooperation, and communication during hurricanes. Just as we at LLPD plan for unexpected weather emergencies, there is plenty you can do to make yourselves, your families and your homes ready for hurricane season. Don’t wait for a storm to threaten!
First, create a disaster supply kit that will last your family three to seven days. Ask yourself what you would need if you couldn’t get to a grocery store, pharmacy, bank or gas station for several days. Your kit should include a gallon per person per day of water, non-perishable food, a can opener, blankets and pillows, rain gear and sturdy shoes, first aid items, prescription drugs, toiletries, a flashlight and batteries, a battery-operated radio, a fully-charged cell phone as well as a non-cordless phone. Pack any special food, medicines or supplies you might need for an infant, an elderly person or a pet. Make sure you have credit cards and cash on hand and gas in your vehicle. Put all of your important documents such as insurance and medical records, bank account numbers and your social security card in a waterproof container or waterproof plastic bag. Nothing but Networking is a monthly event. The business people coming to the event numbers 50 to 100. They meet at a restaurant for lunch at 11:30 am, network for 30 minutes, then go to the seat you were assigned, where you networking with 8 business people at the table during lunch. When sitting at the table and networking it’s a more relaxed atmosphere. You learn more about the other business people and their business, you could refer them better. Businesses bring door prizes so there is a drawing and you might win a prize. It is a win-win business lunch meeting, trading cards and talking business.
Spring Fling was held at the Wildwood Community Center near Brownwood Paddock Square. There were over 75 vendors, free food, free admission, free entertainment, and free drawings all day. The Village Cheerleaders performed. The Village Twirlers, the drummer core, singing groups and all the vendors had free stuff at their tables. It was a site to behold! This event is held every year so watch in this newspaper for the ad telling you when and where.

Lady Lake Chamber Hob Nob is an event hosted by the Lady Lake Chamber and a local Restaurant. The last one was held at Demshar’s near Spanish Springs in the Villages. Local business people come to communicate with each other about their businesses, get to know other business people and enjoy the event. Door prizes are given out, furnished by businesses attending. Usually 75 to 100 business people attend. Join the Chamber, stay in touch with your community and the events.
Chief Tempesta originally started his law enforcement career post 9/11 with the NYPD. He relocated to Florida with his wife, following family to the Lady Lake area. Chief Tempesta has worked for the Lady Lake Police Department for the past 14 years being promoting through the ranks. Chief Tempesta has a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and will be completing his Masters in Criminal Justice this April. Chief Tempesta is a graduate of the University of Louisville- Southern Police Institute- 72nd Command Officer Development Course. He has also attended the 17th session of the Florida Executive Development Seminar (FEDS) course as part of the FBINAA-LEEDA.

You, as a resident of Lady Lake, should go and sit through some of these meetings. Now at a workshop the public cannot talk; they just listen, but that is the way you get informed. For instance, Commissioner Vincent mention that he was impressed by the Town Manager’s interview that she let him sit through. Vincent said she did a good job. The Mayor was not happy. He said he should not have sat through the interview; that he had compromised all they have tried to do in letting the Town Manager how to do her job without interference. Vincent said he never said a word; just sat there and listened and was impressed by the interview. The Mayor was still not happy. It was almost like he was protecting the Town Manager from one of her bosses. SO MUCH FOR TRANSPARENCY!
Anyway the Council agreed to put the vote of the Town Charter review which has not been done in 40 years on the meeting agenda. Commissioner Hannon has been bringing the Town Charter discussion up for a long time. It is on record that several of the Commissioners have said that they have read the Town Charter. First the Town Charter is out dated; second I have been looking on the internet for a legal description for a Township and there are actual boundaries but it takes a legal mind to understand them.
