Villages/Lady Lake

The smoke is a rising on the horizon and gun oil is in the air.  The Cowboy Fast Draw Club, “.45 SideKicks” of the First Baptist Church of Lady Lake hosted a bunch of cowboys and cowgirls in January for a Snow Bird Shoot Out.   This year’s tournament marks not only the 3-year anniversary of the club’s creation.  But also highlights a unique way that the Church outreach program’s shows the community that God’s family does more than just get together on Sundays!!

Shooting started at 9 am, ended at roughly 1pm each day and the public is welcome.  A spectator will see participants dressed in cowboy and cowgirl garb from the 1880’s era while they compete in head-to-head duels.  Each gun fighter attempting to draw and fire their single action .45 caliber pistols faster than a real-life adversary.  For more information about the sport which has clubs across the United States.  Check out the Cowboy Fast Draw Association website at www.Cowboyfastdraw.com

For more information about the shoot out or to come to one of the .45 Sidekicks Tuesday night weekly practices and see how fast you really are.  Call Kevin at 605-999-7687

A nice Sandwich and Ice Cream Parlor. A perfect place after Antique shopping in Micanopy.

After walking through the little shops, my wife and I stopped for lunch. We ordered drinks and their specialty, Chicken Salad Sandwich served with a bag of chips. We sat outside on the porch, where they had an acoustic guitar musician as live entertainment.

It’s a good place to rest after hours of standing and shopping.  If you use the facilities, there’s a voluntary septic fee request. There’s only two food establishments in town.  Continue reading

With the New Year upon us, many people, including me, are happy to say good riddance to 2020!  Moving forward, the Lady Lake Police Department would like to remind you to check around your home to ensure that all alarms, monitors, and detectors are in good working condition.  These include your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector.  It’s a good idea to change the batteries in these detectors every year.  You may want to have them replaced if you have not done so within the past 10 years.

It should come as no surprise that carbon monoxide deaths are the highest in winter.  Cold weather increases the use of gas-powered heating or portable heaters using a fuel source.  Homeowners should be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially those that use natural gas as a heat and cooking source.  These symptoms include feeling dizzy, light headed, and/or nauseated.

It’s a good time to remember the following safety tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.  Here are some tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil or coal-burning appliance inspected and serviced by a qualified technician every year.
  • Install battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home.
  • Don’t use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside the home, garage or outside the home near a window.
  • Don’t burn anything in an unvented stove or fireplace.
  • Turning on an oven whether gas or not is not safe.
  • Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. Make sure to keep them away from any flammable materials, like curtains or blankets.  Never leave children unattended near a space heater.  Check the cords on the heater to make sure that they are not damaged.
  • Check with your local fire department if you want to use a space heater that uses a fuel source such as kerosene.
  • Don’t let a vehicle idle inside a garage attached to a house, even if the garage door is left open. Carbon monoxide will build up and will put you at risk of serious illness or even death.

If a carbon monoxide detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911 from outside. Seek prompt medical attention if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning and if you or someone in your household is feeling dizzy, light-headed or nauseated.  The same goes for a smoke detector.  Your safety is more valuable than any property.

The 6th Annual Experience Lady Lake Expo was hosted this year at a Brand New location, the Lady Lake Soccer Fields! The event was sponsored by Bill Bryan Chrysler Dodge Jeep, UF Health Auxiliary Foundation, Elevate Lake, and the Town of Lady Lake.  There were over 50 Vendors in attendance and we saw around 1,000 visitors. Businesses were excited to have the opportunity to get out in person and interact with the local community!

The Expo also featured a car show this year, and vendors sponsored trophies to award to participants. Thank you to all who attended the expo… we will see you next year!

Driver Awareness Tips

The holidays are a great time for family and friends to create many memories together.  Safety when you leave the house and travel is an obvious concern but please remember, safety begins with you. (https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/holidaytravel/holiday-safety/ )

Please take into consideration some precautions to help slow the spread of COVID-19.  You can view more information at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays.html or https://www.flgov.com/covid-19/.

Follow these tips to help ensure we all Arrive Alive this holiday season:

  • Never drive impaired. Celebrate responsibly and do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or took drugs that cause impairment. Plan ahead and find a safe way home every time – designate a driver or use a ride service.
  • Check your tires. Tires are a vehicle’s first line of defense on the road. Check your tire pressure, tread depth and spare tire especially before long trips.  Do not over load your vehicle, it can result in premature wear and tire blowouts.
  • Buckle up. A seat belt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature. Florida law requires that all drivers, all front seat passengers and all passengers under the age of 18 wear seat belts or the appropriate child restraints.  Seat belts save lives, so buckle up every trip, every time.
  • Register or update your Emergency Contact Information (ECI). ECI is a secure system allowing law enforcement, nationwide, to contact designated family or friends in response to an emergency situation.
  • Observe and obey all speed limits. Speed limits may change as you drive through different types of roadways, so make sure you adjust your speed accordingly. In Florida, the limit will never be over 70 mph.
