Ocala News

August 6, 1938—August 27, 2022

Ron Corbett passed away in his home in Ocala, Florida, surrounded with the love of his brother Ken and his wife of 50 years Sydney. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith—2 Timothy 4:7-8 sums up Dr. Ron’s life. God, Country, Family were the three priorities in his life.

An enthusiastic entrepreneur, Ron had several businesses over the years. In Panama, he had American Supply for 20+ years, offering an unusual combination of restaurant,  billiard, wedding, and cake decorating supplies. The motto was Si Hay—Yes, we have it. When we “retired” to the United States in 1999, he opened Yes Solutions, an ink toner/cartridge and printing business.

His motto for life was “Yes, it can be done.” He loved a challenge and loved helping others learn how to meet their challenges. He volunteered with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) for many years in Ocala, sharing his business acumen and expertise with those who were opening their own new businesses or who needed guidance to help their businesses prosper.     Most people in Marion County already know Nick as a financial advisor. I found his background interesting, he has an extensive military career so I started asking Nick some questions. He agreed to a bio on what he is doing today and a little about his military career. Here is what we  came up with.

Colonel Nick Navetta served thirty years in the U.S. Army, with his last duty position as the J7 Training Division Chief for U.S Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). He is branch qualified in Field Artillery; Military Police; and Civil Affairs and is a Veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia; Operation Iraqi Freedom; and Operation Enduring Freedom. Nick has commanded several units and has served in a variety of key staff positions. His awards include The Army Achievement and Army Commendation Medals; The Meritorious Service Medal; The Bronze Star Medal; and The Legion of Merit Medal. Continue reading

Ocala’s cultural community is robust. It is comprised of organizations big and small, independent artists, arts education providers, and regionally known facilities and festivals, all of which provide the city and county with programs that range from the performing and visual arts to culinary arts and historic preservation.  The City of Ocala is a strong proponent of arts and culture in the community. This includes partnerships with local art organizations and the development of visual, performing arts and educational science programming.

The City of Ocala Cultural Arts & Sciences Division presents many events and programs including public art, First Friday Art Walk,  the biennial Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition, Art in City Spaces exhibitions, Tuscawilla Art Park Series, the Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series, and partnerships with community events around the city. The Discovery Center features quarterly science exhibits, permanent animal exhibits, educational classes, exhibit dates nights and summer camp.

In addition to these programs we utilize our public spaces, both interior and exterior, to provide exhibit and performance space to local, regional and national artists and cultural arts organizations.

(OCALA, FL.) July, 2022 – On Thursday, July 7, at approximately 1:48 p.m., Ocala Fire Rescue responded to reports of a vehicle fire at Outlaw Snax, 3031 W Silver Springs Blvd. Engines 3 and 4, Rescue 3, Tower 1, and Battalion 11, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, units found a detached trailer filled with approximately 40,000 pounds of potato chips burning. The trailer was neither connected to a truck nor threatening any structures. Crews from Engine 4 and Rescue 3 attacked the flames using a pre-connected hose line, while firefighters from Engine 3 and Tower 1 prepared to deploy Engine 4’s deck gun – a high-capacity jet stream used to knock down fires with a clear line of sight.Using the jet stream along with an extinguishing agent, crews extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.
