April has lived and worked in this community since 1987 and began her career in banking, as a part time teller at Barnett Bank in 1995. Over the last 23 years she has worked her way through the ranks of banking, holding many positions and learning about this wonderful community. The past 23 years prepared her for the job as Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Marion County. The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

OCALA, Fla. (May 16, 2018) – The Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA), in partnership with the City of Ocala, is excited to unveil the full lineup for the 2018 Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series. The series is sponsored in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a national funder of creative placemaking that empowers communities to inject new life into underused public spaces. Through free, outdoor concerts, the Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series will present ten free, family-friendly concerts to the public this summer.
The Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series will take place at Webb Field at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Complex located at 1510 NW Fourth St. Concerts will take place every Friday, June 15 through Aug. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open lawn setting. OCALA, Fla. (May 16, 2018) – The City of Ocala Recreation and Parks Department will host a community meeting to discuss fundraising efforts and upcoming events for the Ocala Skate Park project Monday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the proposed location for the skate park, 517 NE Ninth St.
At this meeting, attendees will have an opportunity to walk the site and gain a better prospective of what the park will look like once it is completed. City staff will present updated information about the project, as well as involvement opportunities for local skateboarding and BMX enthusiasts. This meeting is free and open to the public.

The City of Ocala is accepting applications for the street banner lottery now through Wednesday, Aug. 1.
OCALA, Fla. (May 16, 2018) – The City of Ocala Public Works Traffic Division is accepting applications for the street banner lottery now through Wednesday, Aug. 1 for the 2019 calendar year. Reservations can only be made by non-profit organizations.
The City has two street banner locations that can be reserved for one week each. The first is located at the 1100 block of E Silver Springs Boulevard and the second is located at the 1300 block of W Silver Springs Boulevard.
Hard copies of the application can be obtained Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City of Ocala Public Works Traffic Division office located at 1805 NE 30th Ave., building 300. OCALA, Fla. (May 15, 2018) – The City of Ocala will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Wetland Groundwater Recharge Park Tuesday, June 5 at 9 a.m. at the park site located at 2201 NW 21st St.
According to City staff, the Wetland Groundwater Recharge Park will receive three to five million gallons of treated wastewater a day, which, after further treatment and nutrient reduction by the wetland plants will recharge the Upper Floridan Aquifer. In addition to the nutrient reduction and aquifer recharge, the park will also include two and a half miles of walking trails, boardwalk, wildlife overlooks and educational kiosks. Continue reading

OCALA, Fla. (May 15, 2018) – The City of Ocala’s Aquatic Fun Centers will re-open to the public for the summer later this month.
The Jervey Gantt Aquatic Fun Center, 2390 SW 36th Ave., will be open to the public Saturday, May 19 through Monday, Sept. 3.
The Hampton Aquatic Fun Center, 255 NW Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., will be open to the public Saturday, May 26 through Monday, Sept. 3.
Both facilities will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission for a two-hour swim session is $2 for those ages 17 and under and $3 for those ages 18 and up. Admission is free for ages 1 and under. Pool passes are also available for purchase.

In January 2018, Ocala was named one of 15 small to mid-sized towns and cities across America to win a Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Award of $25K in matching funds to present a free concert series at Webb Field in 2018. MCA, in partnership with the City of Ocala, submitted the Levitt AMP proposal and is presenting the concert series. In an effort to inspire and engage communities across the country around the power of creative placemaking, the Levitt Foundation invited the public to choose the top 25 finalists through online voting. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected the City of Ocala to receive a Brownfields Environmental Assessment grant in the amount of $300,000.
OCALA, Fla. (May 9, 2018) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected the City of Ocala to receive a Brownfields Environmental Assessment grant in the amount of $300,000.
Ocala is one of three communities selected in Florida and one of 144 communities nationwide. The grant is intended to be used to conduct outreach, Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments, and cleanup planning. The City of Ocala and EPA will work together under a cooperative agreement to assess and if needed, plan for cleanup of underutilized properties while protecting public health and the environment.
“EPA’s Brownfields Program expands the ability of communities to recycle vacant and abandoned properties for new, productive reuses, using existing infrastructure,” said Scott Pruitt, EPA Administrator. “These grants leverage other public and private investments and improve local economies through property cleanup and redevelopment.” Continue reading

In 2018, more than a million people will be diagnosed with cancer around the world. This alarming statistic affects people and families everywhere. On June 3, 2018, we observe National Cancer Survivors Day in the United States. In support of this day, Social Security encourages getting checkups to provide early detection, raise awareness through education, and recognize the survivors who have gone through this battle or are still living with the disease.
Social Security supports people who are fighting cancer. We offer support to patients dealing with this disease through our disability program. People with certain cancers may be eligible for a Compassionate Allowance. Compassionate Allowances are cases where individuals have medical conditions so severe they obviously meet Social Security’s disability standards, allowing us to process the cases quickly with minimal medical information.
