On May 19, 2022 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Lake County deputies responded to a home located at 42221 Dogwood Avenue in DeLand regarding an unresponsive four-month-old male infant. The infant, Logan Bixler, was transported to AdventHealth DeLand where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives began investigating, at which time methamphetamine was discovered in the home.

Following the Medical Examiner’s autopsy on the child, toxicology results were received on September 9, which showed that methamphetamine was present in Logan’s system. The results indicated that the death was sudden after ingestion, likely by consuming or inhaling methamphetamine. The official cause and manner of Logan’s death was determined to be accidental overdose on methamphetamine.
Throughout the investigation and through numerous interviews, detectives learned that the child’s mother, 25-year-old Jaden Colwell, invited two drug users into her home and allowed them to smoke meth in her living room on the night of the incident. Detectives learned that Logan was asleep in the same room where they smoked the meth, which is consistent with the findings of the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Based upon the investigation, detectives obtained warrants for Manslaughter for 42-year-old Robert Lee Walters and 40-year-old Corey Albert Mincey. Mincey was taken into custody this afternoon; Walters remains at large and is believed to be in the Highland Lakes area in the eastern part of Lake County.

Colwell will be charged through the State Attorney’s Office for Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child; she is currently in jail in connection with a more recent, separate drug case. In the separate case, detectives investigated a drug overdose of an adult male in the immediate vicinity of Colwell’s neighborhood in July.

During the investigation into the July overdose, detectives learned that the decedent, Craig McDuffie, died of a Fentanyl overdose. Detectives discovered through the investigation and phone records that Jaden Colwell was the one who sold him the narcotics that led to his overdose.

Colwell was taken into custody today on a warrant charging her with Death Caused by Unlawful Distribution of Fentanyl in connection with McDuffie’s death.

Colwell’s and Mincey’s booking photos and bond amounts will be available this evening on the Sheriff’s Office website at www.lcso.org .
