MARION COUNTY, Florida (January 10, 2019)- Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO)

Major Crimes detectives are currently investigating the discovery of possible human remains found at a residence located at 18760 SW 47 Street in Lake Tropicana. The couple who lived at the residence have been reported missing by their family, and detectives are investigating their disappearance.

On Sunday, January 6, 2019, MCSO deputies received a phone call from a family member requesting a well-being check on 75-year old Layton Underwood and his wife, 69-year old Donna Underwood. The reportee could not make contact with the couple and requested our assistance. When deputies arrived at the Underwood residence, the couple was not there.

During the investigation, deputies found possible human remains on the property and they immediately requested additional crime scene assistance. MCSO Major Crimes detectives, MCSO forensic technicians, the Medical Examiner’s Office and the University of Florida C.A. Pound Lab responded and are actively conducting an in-depth investigation on the property. Investigators are in the process of recovering the remains and will then begin the identification process.

Detectives are also looking for the Underwood’s vehicle, which is missing from the residence. Their vehicle is a 2014 White VW Golf bearing Florida tag GXRD85. It is believed that Allyn Shane Gilbert (DOB: 04/28/1965), a relative of the Underwood’s, may be driving this vehicle, and deputies are listing him as a Missing Endangered subject due to concerning statements he’s recently made. Detectives would like to make contact with Gilbert to speak to him about this incident. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood have also been listed as Missing Endangered by the MCSO.

If you have any information about this case or if you know Gilbert’s location, you are encouraged to contact Detective Aaron Levy at 352-368-3546. You can also contact the

Marion County Crimestoppers at 352-368-STOP.

UPDATE: Missing Endangered subject Allyn Gilbert was located by authorities in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, January 11, 2019, and the Missing Endangered bolo was canceled. Gilbert was also in possession of the Underwood’s vehicle, which was recovered. MCSO Major Crimes detectives responded to Omaha over the weekend to interview Gilbert about this incident. Currently, Gilbert is being held in Douglas County, Nebraska, for a Marion County warrant for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (The PC is attached to this email). At this point in time, that is the only charge he has. Investigators can now confirm that they in fact recovered human remains from the incident location (18760 SW 47 Street in Dunnellon). The scene was cleared on Friday, and investigators have begun the identification process. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood are still listed as Missing Endangered by the MCSO. Detectives are continuing their investigation and we will inform you of any additional updates once we have them.
