This week, I hosted Florida’s 2018 Human Trafficking Summit bringing together local, state and national leaders in the fight to eradicate trafficking. Hundreds of Floridians dedicated to this fight attended the one-day summit in Orlando, including law enforcement, prosecutors, survivors, advocates, educators, counselors and more.

Florida’s annual summit allows us to share strategies about identifying, reporting, investigating, and prosecuting trafficking cases. It also allows us to continue our collaborative efforts to help victims become survivors.

We have gained a lot of ground in this battle. Since taking office in 2011, we’ve strengthened human trafficking laws, prosecuted traffickers, improved reporting practices and worked together to identify and develop resources to help survivors.

But the fight is not over, and we must continue to work to ensure Florida is a zero-tolerance state for human trafficking.

I want to thank my colleagues on the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking and our great agency partners: the Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Children and Families, Florida law enforcement and our prosecutors.

Working together we will stop trafficking and save lives.

In closing, it is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Florida State Senator Dorothy Hukill earlier this week. Senator Hukill was a dedicated public servant, spending the past two decades in the Florida Legislature working to make Florida a better place to live for everyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.
