Apparently there is a growing movement across the USA to give voting citizens the power to ‘veto’

some of the ridiculous actions of elected representatives from the president (regardless of party) on down to state and local government.

There isn’t much space in a column like this, but suffice to refer to what little we know about the recent COVID ‘Bail-Out-Bill’

What was in it?

Over 900 pages stuffed with earmarks, totally unrelated pork – money going to foreign countries and to obscure government agencies that we never heard of.

Unfortunately this is common practice, and the federal Government is the worst offender.

Some activists call their plan the “Single Subject Rule” or “Single Issue Rule”.

The idea is that no proposed law, including Presidential Executive Orders, could cover more than one subject.

For example, within the first two weeks his presidency, Joe Biden issued 42 executive orders,

During his presidency Trump abandoned ‘Climate Change’ -all with no ‘input’ from the voters.

Government has been unable to handle affirmative action, same-sex marriage, transgender in sports and other controversial problems.

Is it good for this country to constantly change the law every time there’s an election?

SLV is a ‘Veto’ for the people, by the people.

It would mean that government could only pass a law on a single topic, and the voters would have the power to defeat it.

Apparently, over 40 states have some kind of ‘Single-Subject Rules’ in their state constitutions some for over 100 years, but the Federal Congress has none.

This year, because of the ongoing COVID disaster, many good projects will go unfunded, but the pork will proceed as always.

A Single-Subject law could stop it.

There is also a so-called ‘Separate-Vote Requirement’ in some states, but it only limits Constitutional Amendments to one issue.

This ‘One Topic Veto’ (OTV) would give a lot more control to voters..

For example, who do you vote for if you are FOR ‘Women’s Reproductive Rights’- (Pro-Abortion?), and AGAINST, the ongoing, uncontrolled invasion of American borders. (Xenophobic?).

Liberal, Conservative, Republican, Democrat – There is no candidate for you!

But if OTV, was the law from ‘Hicksville ’ to DC, you could vote for the best person available, with the reassurance that, if they break their campaign promises, you have a ‘veto’ in your pocket.

My guess is that our elected (mis) representatives might be a lot more considerate of their supporters preferences.

Right now the only recourse is ‘Vote Them Out”, but that’s happened hundreds of times over the years, and the ‘new guy’ is always just as crooked as the old one.

Would OTV save citizens from corrupt legislators, or would it weaken honest politicians by empowering the ignorant masses?

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of cases, where the judges can’t even decide what, exactly qualifies as a ‘subject’.

This is typical of the ‘powers-that-be’, arrogantly injecting themselves into issues which are none of their business.

As I see it, judges should limit their interference to the courtroom.

That is “Are all proceedings compliant with the law?”

But ‘issues’ are the realm of the voters.

Doesn’t technology now allow all registered ‘Citizen/Voters’ to serve as one big Jury on any issue?

If you truly believe in “We The People”, it might be time for you to demand the right to vote; when you want to vote and on any topic you choose!

Not just when ‘they’ allow you to.

Isn’t this what ‘democracy’ was designed to do?”
